The Fallacies of Fat

In his new book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, endocrinologist and obesity doc Robert Lustig deconstructs the mythology of fat. He says exercise, for all its benefits, won't help you shed pounds -- and that fasting only worsens weight gain.

  1. As per <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/opinion/27mon2.html>NYTimes.com</a>, "Over the last four decades, the obesity rates for adolescents have tripled. Unless there is decisive action, weight and inactivity-related disorders will afflict a steadily larger proportion of the work force."

  2. The point isn't that sugar is *a* factor, it's that as far as diet goes sugar is *the*. Maybe, hopefully, his is obvious to you, but many people are still living with 1980s conceptions that eating fat makes you fat, that eating fat-free foods is beneficial, and that measuring calories is an efficient and effective dietary method.

  3. Enjoyed Dr. Robert Lustig's interview on The Leonard Lopate Show from January 17, 2014.

Dr. Drew Ramsey also talked about how eating fat doesn't make you fat and debunked other food myths relating to cholesterol, vitamins, anti-oxidants, nuts and chocolate on The Leonard Lopate Show.

  4. Duh. Of course increased sugar is a factor. There is no quick and easy fix for a healthy body. People want instant gratification. It's not happening!!
